Why integrate a powerful iGPU on a desktop? It isn't terribly slow, PC simply works different. I would love a Microsoft Surface with one of these APUs running it. AMD has really been pushing towards OIMs and this is what can really do it. iGPUs have been getting better but never reached this point. Regardless of all that, this is still incredibly impressive. Most of the high speed high bandwidth memory they have go to processing 3D graphics, thus more focus is given to running the GPU better (both current gen consoles have some of the worst CPUs you can have and yet still do better than these new APUs). This causes them to run games worse and can't run as much on screen as console APUs can.Ĭonsole APUs don't have as many apps to run at once and their OS have a small foot print. APU's take up part of the main PC RAM, which is on a further lane, with less bandwidth and slower transfer speeds. Computer graphics cards have built in high bandwidth RAM because 3D models transfer larger chunks of data at once and need that bandwidth (and low travel distance) to process high levels of graphical data. Games, video rendering and 3D modeling software are the only things that use GPUs heavily and the latter two can use low end GPUs better than games can. Most PC apps aren't GPU focused and use less than 1% of a dedicated GPU. Just because you're running a game, doesn't mean everything else has stopped running. Its more important that the CPU can handle all the multitasking and data transfer that a PC requires. PC's APUs are CPU based as they are multipurpose machines.
